City Mission Society of Boston, the second oldest mission agency in the US, is a UCC affiliated agency. Boston Urban Outreach offer mission opportunities to groups to engage them in the history and contemporary life of the United Church of Christ in New England while providing service in the local community.
Project/Focus: Service sites vary depending upon the current needs of the partner agencies. Work may include serving at feeding ministries, sorting clothes, packing food, urban gardening, painting or cleaning projects. We work to provide opportunities for groups to serve diverse populations.
Educational/Advocacy Components: Boston is a center of Congregational History. We can provide a walking tour to rediscover these roots. For additional fees, daily reflections can be provided by staff. We also can make arrangements for specialized programs with speakers available to share their firsthand experiences about life in prison or life as a homeless person. Call us to customize a program for your group.
Time: Year-round.
Group Size: 10 minimum; 100 maximum
Minimum Age: Junior high. Recommended for youth and adult groups.
Adult to Youth Ratio: 1:5
Conditions: Group are housed at an inner city UCC church within the Greater Boston area. All locations have fully equipped kitchens and large sleeping areas. Air mattresses are provided. Showers are available.
Cost: A typical week long trip is $215 per person. This includes lodging, orientation, service site coordination, maps/directions to each site, one evening program with speakers who have experienced homelessness and an optional one time reflection with each group.

Heifer International Overlook Farm (Rutland)

Heifer International Learning Center at Overlook Farm is experiential, hands-on, interactive and fun. It works with communities to end hunger and poverty and care for the earth. Overlook Farm introduces participants to the idea that one person can make a difference in ending hunger and poverty. Overlook Farm is a demonstration farm with gardens and animals.
Project/Focus: The amount and length of service activities vary by program and primarily focus on assisting with daily chores on the farm such as gardening, working with livestock and helping with farm maintenance. The service helps maintain the Learning Center so that it remains an active Heifer International community.
Educational/Advocacy Components: Heifer's Learning Centers offer programs that combine experiential learning with service activities. For details please ask for the program pre-trip packet.
Time: We offer 1-night, 2-night or 4-night programs
Group Size: You may register your group for Tier 1, Tier 2 or Tier 3 program.
- Tier 1: 2-16 people
- Tier 2: 17-32 people
- Tier 3: 33-48 people
Minimum Age: Rising 6th grade & up or ages 11 and up.
Adult to Youth Ratio: 1:7
Conditions: Lodging is provided in either dorm-style bunkrooms with modern restroom, shower and electricity or in platform tents with cots and electricity with nearby modern restrooms and showers. Meals are prepared by our staff and served buffet-style. Meals include farm-based products as much as possible in the menu.
Cost: Tuition fees vary per program and include programming, lodging and meals.
