Work Needed: PNOLA provides contractor quality construction services on homes for vulnerable individuals and families. PNOLA utilizes groups of volunteers and provides project management services for homeowner who could not otherwise afford to re-inhabit their homes. PNOLA was founded as a response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Volunteers are used in multiple aspects of home construction, excluding roofing, electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, foundation/structure, and any activity that requires heights above 16 feet.
Time: Year-round. January 1, 2012 - December 31, 2012 (Work Monday - Thursday; 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.)
Group Size: 15-25 ideal. Smaller groups accepted; absolute maximum of 40. Exception: Groups serving during March 2012 can have a maximu of 50.
Conditions: Groups of up to 15 can be housed at the PNOLA office (former church parsonage of Central UCC). Two full bathrooms, bunk style beds, washer/dryer and full kitchen available. Volunteers bring own bedding. Larger groups - PNOLA can help with arrangements with other housing facilities in New Orleans.
Cost: $10 per person per night for housing on-site. No charge for volunteers staying in off-site accommodations.
Minimum Age: High school and older. Work is best suited for ages 18+
Adult to Youth Ratio: 1:5
Education Components: Devotional Guide "Meeting God in the Ruins" is available on-site. Orientation session includes discussion on how history and culture translate to present day Post-Katrina New Orleans. Guest speaker for more in-depth discussion on particular topics can be arranged by PNOLA (rates vary). PNOLA can arrange for a city tour including description of storm and its aftermath. Tour donation is a minimum of $150 per group with group's own vehicle. Without group's own vehicle, donation is additional $50 to cover gas costs. Friday is often the best day for these tours.
