Hurricane Sandy, in October 2012, left Moonachie and Little Ferry in northern New Jersey under several feet of salt water for days after a 9 foot ocean surge overflowed the Hackensack River.  Almost all of the small homes in this area were damaged and residents were traumatized.  Local organizations responded immediately to help support these communities and projects are now ongoing to repair homes in this area.  Much of the media focuses on areas on the shore so this small in-land area of Northern New Jersey tends to be overlooked.
