UCC Disaster Recovery in Suwannee Valley, north Florida with the Columbia/Suwannee Counties Long Term Recovery Committee

In June of 2012, Tropical Storm Debby inundated north Florida causing overflowing rivers and immense flooding in rural areas. Local volunteers responded powerfully. NOW is the time for long-term disaster recovery repair and rebuilding. Volunteer groups needed THIS SUMMER and FALL.
Florida Conference UCC groups welcome others to join them May 25 - June1 and June 22-29, 2013. Additional groups are needed throughout the summer and fall.
Work Needed: Repair/Rebuild homes. Roofing is especially pertinent. Mobile homes need to be re-set on their foundations. Sheet rocking, painting, and other interior work also needed.
Time: May through August, 2013 and September through October, 2013. Choose your dates.
Group Size: 30 maximum
One in Eight: Each group should include a ratio of at least 1:8 of skilled construction persons able to coordinate and teach others for each group. Long Term Recovery committee provides general Construction Coordinator and materials. Case Manage r also will work closely with groups.
Minimum Age: 18 years for roof-work; 16 years for interior and ground-work.
Accommodations: Housing for groups provided at local church in Lake City, FL, arranged through United Way Volunteer Coordinator. Cots and kitchen access provided. Groups bring own bedding and prepare own meals. Showers, bathrooms, and lounge room for meetings available in church building.
Tools: Groups should bring standard carpentry tools (hammers and cordless screw drivers, etc.) No special tools will be required. A majority of the work will be done on mobile homes. Specific questions can be directed to the Volunteer Coordinator upon registration.
Cost: $10/day/person or $50/week/person. Costs for case management, building materials, tools, and construction supervision provided through the local long-term recovery committee.
