United Church News wins five awards, Office of Communication garners ‘Best of Class'

At the Religious Communication Congress, RCC2000, held in Chicago the last week in March, United Church News received five awards for articles published in 1999.
      At the same event, the UCC Office of Communication received a Best of Class award and a DeRose-Hinkhouse Award of Excellence from the Religion Communicators Council for the Heifer Project video, "Get Connected!," Robert Chase, Producer; Eric Caldwell, Videographer; and Terry Peterson, Writer/Director.
      Three of the newspaper's awards were DeRose-Hinkhouse Awards of Merit. One went to William C. Winslow for his three-part series on seminarian debt. The other two went to News editor W. Evan Golder for the feature story, "Spiritual journey leads to civil disobedience," and the newspaper editorial, "The UCC needs an open meeting policy."
      United Church News also received two awards from the Associated Church Press. An Award of Merit for the news story, "Alejandrina Torres comes home," went to writer Barb Powell and photographer Nozomi Ikuta. An Award of Honorable Mention for the opinion column, "Please come back, says jailed teen," went to W. Evan Golder.
