USS Cole tragedy claims grandson of Avery Post; UCC statement issued
November 2000

Patrick Howard Roy, 19, a fireman apprentice, was one of the 17 sailors killed in the apparent terrorist bomb attack on the destroyer Cole in the port city of Aden, Yemen, on Oct. 12.

He was the grandson of the Rev. Avery D. Post, fourth president of the United Church of Christ, and his wife, Peg.

The Rev. John H. Thomas, the church's current General Minister and President, issued the following statement:

"We have learned with sorrow of the death of Patrick Roy, a sailor who was killed in the bomb attack on the USS Cole. Patrick was the grandson of Avery Post, the fourth president of the United Church of Christ, and his wife Peg. Both Peg and Avery are beloved servants of Christ's church, and we join with them in prayer for Patrick and all the young men and women of the Cole who gave their lives last week.

"The violence in the Middle East has touched us once again in a very personal way, as it has touched us in the recent deaths of hundreds of others throughout the region. I urge all congregations of the United Church of Christ to surround Patrick's family with prayer.

"In the continuing crisis, may the whole Body of Christ take seriously our vocation to be agents of reconciliation, to pray and work in our communities and the world for the day when families will not grieve for the loss of their daughters and sons."

The Rev. John F. Gundlach, UCC Ecclesiastical Endorser for military chaplains, added his sympathy. "We need to remember that many of our UCC members have loved ones in uniform serving our country," he said. "We must not forget them or what they do for us all—many times serving away from home and going in harm's way."

Roy grew up in Keedysville, Md., attended school in Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y., and enlisted after graduating last year.

As of this writing, a burial service was planned for the Antietem National Cemetery in Sharpsburg, Md.
