UCC, Disciples urge prayers, end to acts of ‘violence and agression'
On Oct. 17, leaders of the UCC and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) issued a Middle East statement condemning "the acts of violence and aggression" and calling upon the Palestinian and Israeli leadership "to be bold in assuming responsibility for the escalation of violence..."
The statement also "affirm(ed) the right of the Palestinians and the Israelis to live within secure and recognized borders, according to UN resolutions and international law."
It called for prayers for Palestinian Christians, missionaries, and the people of the two nations (Israel and Palestine) and the three faiths (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) who live there.
The statement was signed by the General Ministers and Presidents of the two churches, the Rev. John H. Thomas, UCC, and the Rev. Richard Hamm, Disciples. The two co-executives of the Common Global Ministries Board, Dale Bishop, UCC, and the Rev. Patricia Tucker Spier, Disciples, also signed the statement.
