United Church News reaches new heights
November 2001

92,000 subscribers, 19 Conference editions

November 2001

"Today," writes a college student who had participated in an early consultation on the future of United Church News, "when I received my forwarded mail from home, I found that you have instituted some wonderful changes in the paper—and it's free. I'm impressed that your staff took our suggestions so seriously."

His is among the countless positive responses in person, e-mail and in writing from people regarding the new directions for United Church News. Since June, United Church News has experienced:

 a 60 percent increase in readership;

 a 35 percent increase in the number of conference editions;

 a 100 percent increase in ad sales without raising the rates; and

 $13,000 in contributions from more than 700 readers.

With a 36-page national section and either two-, four- or eight-page Conference sections, the October issue was the largest ever in the newspaper's 16-year history.

This November issue will reach more than 92,000 homes, with a combined estimated readership of more than 165,000 persons. From a low of around 55,000 subscribers in June, United Church News, named Best of Class among religious newspapers in 2000 by the Associated Church Press, is set to double that number early in 2002.
