Goma volcano prompts UCC response
The United Church of Christ has provided support for relief aid to survivors of the volcanic eruption of Mount Nyiragongo on Jan. 17 in Goma, Congo, by contributing funds for shelter, food, water and medical supplies.
To date, $20,000 from the One Great Hour of Sharing offering has been sent to Action by Churches Together, International and Church World Service—our ecumenical relief partners. Interchurch Medical Assistance, another UCC partner, is shipping medical supplies for use in Goma and the surrounding area. A grant of $5,000 from One Great Hour of Sharing will assist in covering the shipping costs.
The molten lava cascaded down the mountain towards Goma, a city of half a million people on the north shore of Lake Kivu, destroying 14 villages before reaching and destroying three-quarters of the city, including 12,000 homes. More than 100 persons are thought to have died and more than 400,000 people have fled to Rwanda.
To contribute, UCC members can make a check payable to a local church marked "International Disaster" and request that it be sent through the Conference office to Wider Church Ministries, 700 Prospect Ave., Cleveland, OH 44115-1100. Or they can make checks payable to Wider Church Ministries, marked "International Disaster," and send them directly to Cleveland.
