A search committee has recommended that the Rev. José A. "Joe" Malayang be re-elected to serve a third and final four-year term as executive minister of the UCC's Local Church Ministries and, by virtue of that position, as a member of the five-person Collegium of Officers.

The eight-member committee's recommendation was affirmed unanimously by LCM's board of directors on April 23 in Cleveland. The "call by election" process now goes to General Synod where delegates will be asked to affirm or reject the nomination.

"Joe has the local church at the core of his heart and embraces the diversity of what it means to be the UCC," search committee chair Holly Miller said later. "It was affirming to hear how appreciative the LCM board and team leaders are of his leadership, his work toward stabilization and his commitment to holistic programs such as the Congregational Vitality Initiative."

Malayang, 66, has served as LCM's executive minister since 1999. Before that, he was general secretary for the division of evangelism and local church development, an agency of the former United Church Board for Homeland Ministries. He also served in the former Office for Church Life and Leadership, on the Southern California- Nevada Conference staff and as a pastor for 28 years in Michigan and the Philippines.

A Filipino American, Malayang has degrees from Silliman University in the Philippines, the University of the Philippines and Wayne State University in Detroit.

Editor's note: As reported, the Rev. John H. Thomas has been nominated and will face General Synod election to a third and final four-year term as general minister and president.
