Through church members' gifts to tsunami relief, the UCC - in close association with its partner churches in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, India, Thailand and Myanmar - is providing food, medical care, shelter, hygiene and housekeeping kits, water purification systems and sanitation facilities for thousands of affected residents.
As of March 4, UCC members had contributed $1,526,082 through One Great Hour of Sharing to assist tsunami victims. Meanwhile, members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) had offered $1,656,161. Together, these significant dollars are funding relief and rehabilitation efforts through the two denominations' joint Global Ministries.
Emphasizing that disaster relief is not only a short-term response, Global Ministries' executives say they are prepared to sustain a 5-to-10- year funding plan for tsunami rehabilitation programs.
