Are you a good writer? Have an eye for photography, good with a video camera or always documenting life with your cell phone? The United Church News may have a place for you in the newsroom at the National Youth Event. The UCC news staff is now recruiting student talent attending NYE at Purdue University July 10-13, in Lafayette, Ind., to contribute to the news effort.
The UCC's Publishing, Identity and Communication team will be selecting a several interns to supplement the NYE news team, youth who can volunteer to share their experiences with the rest of the national church. These youth journalists interested in writing, photography or video work will be asked to document the event from their perspectives, submitting blogs, pictures or short video clips to be published daily in KYeP, the UCC's news e-zine, and posted on the UCC news portal.
"Given that this is strictly voluntary, we want the interns to fully engage NYE as a participant, too," said Ann Poston, director of the UCC's communication office. "It's a wonderful opportunity for budding journalists to learn and have fun at the same time. The young people chosen take on a little extra responsibility, providing news coverage from their perspective in exchange for the professional experience and networking exposure. "
Two writers, two still photographers and two videographers will be chosen to work with reporters assigned to the event, under the supervision of UCC editors and video production staff.
Prospective journalists 13-18 years of age interested in joining the staff in the NYE newsroom should submit a cover letter and short autobiographical story of no more than 300 words. Reporting candidates should include five journalistic writing examples, either as document attachments or online links. Still photographers should include up to 10 examples of individual news photographs as online links. Videographers should include up to five short (not to exceed 5 minutes) video segments as online links.
Selected students will be required to attend a pre-NYE newsroom orientation and will be expected to file a blog, submit pictures, post a news video daily or assist with the UCC Facebook entries and twitter feeds.
Interested candidates should email cover letter, story, and articles and/or photo links to Managing Editor Connie Larkman with the subject line "NYE Newsroom Internship." Those selected will be notified by June 1.
