The popularity of social media and a continuing passion for peace in the Middle East have resulted in the formation of a UCC-driven online forum.

"The new UCC Palestine Israel advocacy Network (PIN) is a grassroots movement within the UCC designed for people who want to be involved in promoting peace and advocacy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict," said Peter Makari, UCC executive for the Middle East and Europe.

Facebook devotees can visit the group and become part of the discussion.

Gay Harter, UCC PIN steering committee member and lay leader at First Congregational UCC in Cambridge, Mass., said that she first visited Jerusalem in 2006.

"It was thrilling to walk where Jesus walked, to stand on the spot where he cooked breakfast for his disciples, to rub shoulders with Christian pilgrims from all over the world and hear them speaking in many tongues," said Harter. "But it was disturbing to be awakened to the present reality of political life in Palestine/Israel."

Harter said she returned home a changed person.

"The more I learned about the conflict, the more heartbroken I became, and the more I wanted to stand in solidarity with Palestinians and Israeli peace activists," she said.
