UCAN, the UCC HIV & AIDS Network, is among the national organizers planning several faith events at AIDS 2012, the 19th International AIDS Conference being held in Washington, D.C. July 22-27, 2012, and the Interfaith Preconference July 19-21 at Howard University.  Over 500 faith-based representatives are expected to participate in these events.

The Interfaith Pre-conference, “Taking Action for Health, Dignity, and Justice” will be held 19-21 July at Howard University. Participants will focus on the response to HIV from faith contexts, advocacy, and on the ground responses.

A plenary session on “Dignity” will draw out religious recognition of humankind as made in the image of God or embodied with divine spirit with the importance of the inclusion and leadership of people living with HIV in community responses, including some of the social and legal barriers that prevent such inclusion. A plenary on “Health” will examine opportunities and challenges for the needed further scale-up of anti-retroviral treatment. The final plenary on “Justice” will address attitudes, policies, social inequalities, and practices that continue to make people on the margins of society most vulnerable to HIV.
