JOHN GRAHAM shipped out on a freighter when he was 16 and took part in the first ascent of Mt. McKinley’s North Wall at 20. He hitchhiked around the world at 22, and spent three days in an Iranian jail, falsely accused of spying. In the mid-1970s, he was a member of NATO’s top-secret Nuclear Planning Group. He has served as foreign policy advisor to Sen. John Glenn (D-Ohio), and as an assistant to Ambassador Andrew Young at the United Nations. In 1980, a near-death experience forced him to begin a search for meaning. Interested in finding better ways to handle challenge and conflict, he became a leader for the Giraffe Heroes Project in 1983, a nonprofit that moves people to stick their necks out for the common good in order to create a just, ethical and compassionate world.
