The Rev. Michael Schuenemeyer, UCC Wider Church Ministries executive for health and wholeness advocacy, and the Rev. Ruth Garwood, executive director of the UCC's Coalition for LGBT concerns, jointly issued a pastoral letter following the passage of legislation in Arizona, California and Florida, restricting marriage to one man and one woman along with a measure in Arkansas that bans unmarried persons from adopting.

In the case of California's Proposition 8, it overturns an earlier state Supreme Court decision permitting same-sex marriage.

The Rev. Mary Susan Gast, conference minister of Northern California Nevada Conference and Rev. Jane Fisler Hoffman, interim conference minister of Southern California Nevada Conference, and many California UCC churches were involved in opposition to Proposition 8.
