Call to Worship (Psalm 121 adapted by Rev. Karen M. Farthing)

I lift up my eyes to the hills— from where will my help come?
My help comes from God, who made heaven and earth.
God is your keeper; God is your shade at your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
Our God will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore.

Opening Prayer (Source: Prayers Encircling the World, written by Canaan Banana, Zimbabwe, p. 108.)

Open my eyes that they may see the deepest needs of the people.
Move my hands that they may feed the hungry;
Touch my heart that it may bring warmth to the despairing;
Teach me the generosity that welcomes strangers;
Let me share my possessions to clothe the naked;
Give me the care that strengthens the sick;
Make me share in the quest to set the prisoner free.
In sharing our anxieties and love, our poverty and our prosperity,
We partake of your divine presence. Amen

Prayer of Praise (Source: Harvest for the World by Geoffrey Duncan, written by Christian Aid, p.18)

We praise you God
For the wonders of life on our planet,
And we give you thanks
For all that the earth provides
For our food,
Shelter and well-being.
We commit to you
Those areas of the world
Where the resources of nature have been plundered
And people's livelihoods threatened
And we pray for those who work
To restore the land to people
Who most need its harvest.

OGHS Theme:  Sharing Brings Joy to us, to others, to God.

Many UCC Churches are already participating in Growing Projects. Are you one of them? If so come hear how your support is helping initiative around the world. If you are not yet involved, find out how you could.

Offering Prayer (source: Harvest for the World by Geoffrey Duncan, written by John Johansen-Berg, p.52)
What should I give to the land?
Perhaps some return of the abundance I receive.
The land blesses me with grain, bread of life;
The sky blesses me with rain, water of life.
The land gives me abundant fruit, food of life;
The air gives me oxygen to breathe, spirit of life.
How can I number the blessings of earth?
It daily grants me gifts beyond counting.
The generosity of mother earth surpasses our expectation.
What then shall I give to the land?
Surely nothing less than the best stewardship
That I can offer through all the talents I possess.

Prayer of Dedication (adapted from Gifts of Many Cultures, by Maren C. Tirabassi and Kathy Wonson Eddy, p. 53)

O God, to those who have hunger give bread,
And to those who have bread give the hunger for justice.
Bless these our offerings, that they may bring bread and justice to your people. Amen.
Affirmation of Faith (Source: Harvest for the World by Geoffrey Duncan, written Christian Aid, pp. 9-10)
We believe that God hopes and works for a world where all shall be included in the feast of life, and that in Christ we see how costly it is to bring that world about.
We believe that God's strategy for a new world is to put the poorest first, and that nothing is more important for God's people than to bring the poor the good news.
We believe that rich and poor alike can be generous, wise and creative because all are made in God's image, and that all are made poorer when any are left out.
We confess that we use our strength to protect ourselves and order the world to benefit the rich and not the poor, and that none of us can be trusted with too much power over others.
We believe that loving our neighbors means working for justice so that all may have a say in what happens to them.
We believe that God made the earth to sustain and delight us and that we are called to take care of it and enjoy it.
We believe that the God of all the earth is at work beyond the churches as well as within them, making common cause with all who want the poor to be included.
We long for a time when the meek shall inherit the earth and all who hunger and thirst after justice shall be satisfied, and we believe that, despite the persistence of evil, now is always the time when more good can be done and we can make a difference.

Commissioning and Benediction (Source: Harvest for the World by Geoffrey Duncan, written by Duncan L. Tuck, p.241)

We give thanks for food, the life-giver.
We give thanks for land, and the turning of seasons.
We give thanks for those who toil for our convenience.
And we commit ourselves to act thankfully and thoughtfully,
In the products we buy, the amount we pay, the places we shop.
We commit ourselves to God's Harvest-
The gathering, in love, of all that is good.
We commit ourselves to Jesus, the seed of God,
Crushed and broken for this world,
That the Harvest may be glorious.

May you let the Spirit of God tend you.
May the seed of Jesus grow within you, strong and true.
May God the Creator bring your fruit to maturity,
And may the love of God multiply,
Forty, sixty, one hundred fold,
Through all you do.
