Food + Education = Hope in Haiti

There are many children in Haiti, but only 20 percent of them have the opportunity to attend school or learn to read and write. Parents who can barely feed their families only dream of providing their children with an education. Girls in Haiti have even less of a chance of getting an education.

Gifts to One Great Hour of Sharing provide support to children who want to learn. Now, children are not only attending school, they are enjoying nutritious hot meals through Global Ministries' partnerships with the National Spiritual Council of Churches in Haiti (CONASPEH) and the House of Hope.

CONASPEH offers a Food for Learning Program that provides students with a nutritious hot meal each day. Without the food, the children were unable to concentrate on their studies because they were tired, weak, and hungry. As a result of the Food for Learning Program, the students have become healthier, and are getting better grades.

The House of Hope offers a 3-year program to girls, and teaches reading, math, and other skills that will help them to become independent adults. This program faced many challenges in enrolling the students into its program. At first, the parents thought their children were needed more in the home to do chores and to get clean water from community water centers. The House of Hope helped to teach the parents about the importance of an education, and encouraged parents to allow their girls to attend. This program also provides a nutritious hot meal each day the girls attend, and is oftentimes the only meals they receive.

Both programs work very hard to meet the needs of the people in Haiti. CONASPEH is an organization that serves 4,000 grass-root churches in a common witness of justice and peace and the fulfillment of the gospel of good news to all. The House of Hope is concerned with human rights, and educates girls in a society where women have no voice.

Both organizations received a grant from One Great Hour of Sharing to help to keep Hope in Haiti.
