Casa Bette (Betty's House)
Casa Bette (Betty's House) in Venezuela is another example of how One Great Hour of Sharing dollars help make the lives of everyday people better.
Expectant mothers are often turned away from the hospitals in Venezuela because there are not enough hospitals to care for those in need. Women sometimes have to travel miles and miles on foot to get to the hospital. Once there, the hospitals are only provide the emergency care, accepting women at the time of delivery, and discharging them within hours of having their babies. The hardship this places on families is incredible. Women cannot travel alone, for fear of what could happen. Parents who have their other children to consider, must find temporary living arrangements for them or take them to the hospital with them. Once the mother gives birth, she is quickly released from the hospital and most often is unprepared to make the long journey home.
Casa Bette is located next to one of the hospitals in Venezuela. Women are lucky because they can stay at Casa Bette when their due dates are very close, and return to the House once the baby is born. Mothers can wait here and receive assistance, until their bodies are ready to make the long trip home. The entire family may be welcomed at Casa Bette, and young children can be cared for while their mothers are delivering their babies. Casa Bette provides a place of hospitality and welcome for families.
