Sow Seeds to Fight Hunger

June 1, 2007

 The Seed Program

Since 2000 the United Church of Christ, through the Africa office of Global Ministries, has provided support to the Seed Program, Inc. to support countries on the continent of Africa including Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe.

We have received comments from the recipients and administrators of the Seed Program. Here are a few of the comments in their own words…

"... Our country has been hit hard by drought which since 2000 there has never been enough food for the people. We thank you for being there for us when the situation was so critical and unbearable."

"... we gave seed to over 20,000 families who had nothing to start their lives moving again. The program benefited individuals, schools and clinics. Some beneficiaries are those people who have the dreaded disease HIV/AIDS who do not have enough food. The seed helped them to grow their own vegetables which are most needed in their bodies."

"… We have now distributed all the seed to our 47 churches, 12 schools, one orphanage and Trinity college which deals in horticulture. People are happy because without the seed during this season they would be suffering from malnutrition but now they have enough vegetables to feed their families."

"... Thank you again, for coming to our rescue at this time. All the people who receive these seeds are so grateful that you are doing this wonderful job to save the lives of strangers."

The support given over the last five years to the Seeds Program was funded by gifts to One Great Hour of Sharing. In order to expand this valuable program, it is crucial to find additional sources of funding.

For every $15.00 given to support this program, your church can provide an assortment of 100 packets of vegetable seeds, enough to assist ten families in Africa. In addition to the seeds, basic gardening information in local languages and a small grant to purchase tools, drip irrigation supplies, and other needed items are provided.

For more information about this program, please contact our office.

All gifts to One Great Hour of Sharing are tax deductible and 100% of designated gifts go to the designated area of response. Non-designated funds are encouraged. They allow One Great Hour of Sharing to address future hidden and forgotten emergencies around the world.
