The names of current UCC General Minister and President John H. Thomas and current Executive Minister of Local Church Ministries (LCM) José (Joe) A. Malayang are being forwarded to their respective boards with recommendations that they be renominated.
The announcement was made in January by David Anderson and Cheryl Cramer, chairs respectively of the Executive Council and the LCM board.
Because the five members of the first Collegium of UCC officers were elected at General Synod 22 in 1999 to staggered terms, the initial terms of Thomas and Malayang will expire this year.
Last September, two search committees were charged with seeking, respectively, one candidate for General Minister and President and one candidate for Executive Minister of Local Church Ministries.
One committee will recommend to the Executive Council at its March 14-18 meeting that Thomas be renominated.
The other committee will recommend the same for Malayang to the LCM Board at its April 19- 22 meeting.
If renominated by their respective boards, Thomas and Malayang will be presented to General Synod 23, to be held in Kansas City, Mo., July 13-17, for call by election to full, four-year terms.
