Former conference minister Fiske had knack for justice

A native New Englander and former conference minister of the United Church of Christ with a passion for justice, the Rev. Robert D. Fiske, died last week in New Port Richey, Fla.

Fiske served churches in the New England region, and was a conference leader for both the New Hampshire Conference of the UCC and the Maine Conference of the UCC, beginning in the 1960s. He was an associate conference minister in the Maine Conference from 1969 through 1973, working in Bangor, Maine, and later served on the New Hampshire conference ministry team (as one of three co-equal ministers) until 1990, when he retired.

Fiske joined Community Congregational Church in New Port Richey in 2012.

"As conference minister, you are a pastor's pastor, but he also served individual and local churches. He had a real concern for a poor and matters of social justice, and had a passion for justice and peace," said the Rev. Mark Hamilton, Fiske's pastor at Community Congregational Church in New Port Richey. "He made a real impact, and as a pastor here, he was always supportive of me and we always enjoyed each other's company."

Fiske is survived by his wife, Lisa (Kelly), sons David (Laura) and Daniel, daughters Nancy (Mike) Drawta and Megan, a sister, Vivian Turner, sisters-in law Suzanne Killien and Janet Rogan, and several loving nieces and nephews. Fiske was predeceased by his brother Carl and sister, Elsie Willette.

In his ministry with the UCC, Fiske's pastoral care extended to his congregations in Maine and New Hampshire, and to youth groups. In addition to his love of Maine, he was an avid life-long Boston Red Sox fan. A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, Aug. 31 at 10 a.m., Community Congregational Church, New Port Richey. Fiske's ashes will be scattered in his beloved state of Maine. Donations may be made to the Benevolent Fund, Community Congregational Church UCC, 6533 Circle Blvd., New Port Richey, Fla., 34652.
