Joining a gradually growing number of Korean UCC congregations, Vision Church of Houston UCC will be received April 28 as a church with standing in the Houston Association of the South Central Conference.
"This is one of the congregations that the Rev. Hojun Chang in Storrs, Conn., helped us and the Conference connect with through his outreach and UCC polity course in Korean," said the Rev. David Schoen, team leader for Congregational Vitality and Discipleship in UCC Local Church Ministries.
That connection is solidified by the fact that Chang and the Rev. Soo Kang, pastor of Vision Church, attended seminary together, said the Rev. Douglas Anders, South Central Conference minister.
"We want them to join the UCC and also to be active participants," said Anders, who will be on hand for the inaugural worship, which will follow the Association's spring meeting. "They have been coming to Association meetings, and to show signs of making those covenantal connections is very good."
"They have a really, really spirited congregation," said Anders. "I don't understand the language, but they sing very robustly, with a lot of spirit. The times I have worshiped there, I have felt God's spirit, even though I don't understand a word of Korean."
"This church, along with the growing number of new Korean congregations, add to the vital progressive spirit in the United Church of Christ," Schoen said.
