The UCC's Disaster Response Ministry has issued two $100,000 emergency appeals in recent days to aid cyclone recovery in Myanmar and earthquake response in China, in addition to issuing a $50,000 request to aid tornado victims in Missouri and Oklahoma.
After a massive earthquake hit China on May 12, the UCC rushed support to its partners in order to aid victims. The denomination is asking church members to contribute at least $100,000 for an emergency appeal to aid those affected. "One Great Hour of Sharing has already sent funds to the Amity Foundation in China to carry out relief work," the appeal reads. "However, we urgently need to raise $100,000."
The request comes less than a week after the UCC issued a $100,000 emergency appeal for cyclone-devastated Myanmar. "It is feared that up to 100,000 have died," the Myanmar appeal reads. "An estimated 1 million people are also reportedly homeless and in dire need of emergency help."
In addition, after deadly tornadoes left hundreds of homes destroyed in Missouri and Oklahoma, the UCC asked its members and churches on May 13 to offer $50,000 in support.
