The United Church of Christ's Office of Communication, Inc. (OC, Inc.) has announced the honorees of its 30th Annual Everett C. Parker Ethics in Telecommunications Lecture and Breakfast to be held Sept. 25 in Washington, D.C.

Charles Benton, chairman of the board of the Benton Foundation, will receive the Everett C. Parker Award in recognition of his many years of leadership and support for promoting the public interest in traditional and digital media.

S. Jenell Trigg, chair of the Intellectual Property and New Media and Technology Practice Group of the law firm of Lerman Senter PLLC, will receive the Donald H. McGannon Award in recognition of her work to promote opportunities in telecommunications media for women and persons of color.

The event is held each year by OC, Inc. to inspire the media and public interest advocates and honor those individuals making a difference in ethical broadcasting. The Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr. will deliver the Parker Lecture. This year's event will also celebrate the centennial of Rev. Everett Parker's birth, as well as his pioneering work as an advocate for the public's rights in broadcasting.

The Parker Lecture will be delivered in the sanctuary of First Congregational United Church of Christ, founded by abolitionists in 1865 as the first racially integrated church in Washington, D.C. The congregation has been at its current location at 10th and G Streets NW since 1869.

OC, Inc. is the media justice arm of the United Church of Christ, founded in 1959 to reform television stations in the south that were doing a poor job of covering the Civil Rights Movement. Since its founding, OC, Inc. has worked to ensure that women, minorities and low-income persons have equal access to ownership, production, employment and decision making in media. The Parker Lecture is the only lecture in the country to examine telecommunications in the digital age from an ethical perspective.
