Southern California Nevada Conference rolls out the welcome for Synod attendees

Southern California rolled out the green carpet on the Marina Green, sprinkled it with gourmet food trucks, and roofed it with blue sky. It was a glimpse into the Long Beach life of fun, and hundreds of General Synod 2013 delegates and visitors of all ages relaxed into the afternoon.

Beyond the row of food trucks, an inflatable slide awaited the excited children – and a few brave adults indulging their sense of wonder. Live music added to the afternoon’s entertainment.

Shirley and Roger Savage, members of La Mesa (Calif.) UCC, appreciated the variety. “It’s wonderful. It’s fun. You have a lot of options,” Shirley said, and the two had taken advantage of them. After a slider or two, Roger sought a lemon zest gelato as a palate cleanser.

They’d had plenty to choose from: Sliders, hot dogs, Hawaiian cuisine, Indian curries, vegetarian options, gelato and sorbet, and even grilled cheese. All received rave reviews.

The light breeze off the Pacific Ocean just a few hundred feet away came as a relief and a delight to some coming from parts of the country enduring heat waves. “I thought it was going to be hotter,” said Nicole Bernier, a young adult delegate from Second Congregational Church UCC in Coventry, Conn. “Yesterday and today are just beautiful.”

Sunday’s forecast promises somewhat higher temperatures: and plenty of that southern California sun.
