A section of a basement ceiling collapsed at the Park Place Congregational UCC in Pawtucket, R.I., on Dec. 30, injuring several people.
According to a local news report, five people were taken to the hospital after being struck by falling heavy material, plaster and debris. None of the injuries were expected to be life threatening, according to a Pawtucket Fire Department official.
Eyewitnesses said two meetings were being held in the basement at the time of the ceiling collapse. Church officials said they were not aware of any structural problems at the building that would have led to the incident. A building inspector was on the scene to examine the 75-year-old church building.
