Thomas reaches out to Unitarian church in wake of tragedy

Written by Staff
July 28, 2008

Shortly after word of the shootings at a nearby Unitarian church reached attendees at the UCC's National Youth Event in Knoxville, Tenn., on July 27, the Rev. John H. Thomas, UCC General Minister and President, sent a message to Unitarian Universalist President William Sinkford.

"We are deeply saddened to hear that one man has died and that others are injured, and are aware that this trauma will live with the members of the church for a long time," said Thomas in the message.

Here is the complete text of the message:

"I am in Knoxville attending our United Church of Christ National Youth Event at the University of Tennessee.

"Following our morning plenary word reached us of the shooting at Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church just a few blocks away from our meeting.  We are deeply saddened to hear that one man has died and that others are injured, and are aware that this trauma will live with the members of the church for a long time.  Know that when our 2100 youth and their adult leaders gather for our closing worship tonight we will be observing a time of prayer for the members of the congregation, for their pastor, for those who have been injured, and for those who mourn the loss of a family member and friend.  We will also be praying for the individual who, for reasons yet to be determined, committed this violent act.  And we will be giving thanks for your leadership which I know will be sustaining and encouraging not only to this congregation, but also to the entire Unitarian Universalist Association in the days ahead.

"Please assure your community that the members of the United Church of Christ will be extending an embrace of deep friendship and care during this time of grief and sorrow."
