Muslim author to discuss with Tavis Smiley new book on Islam for Christians

September 11, 2006
Hussain's interview with Smiley begins with comments on the book's subtitle, Two Faiths, One God, and with the issue of exclusivity versus inclusivity and the notion that if we are all children of one God, then we worship the same God.

American Muslim identity and such famous African-American Muslims as Muhammad Ali and Dave Chapelle also are discussed. "If you saw them walking down the street," says Hussain, "you wouldn't think 'terrorist' and be afraid; you'd probably ask for their autograph."

The subject of conversion to Islam also is covered, along with the reality that, for many converts, it is Islam's emphasis on social justice that leads to their conversion. A conversation about the ways in which the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and work continues to serve as an inspiration for people to work together helps focus the social justice discussion. Hussain also mentions Muslim Farid Esack, who worked to help end apartheid in South Africa and now works with "Positive Muslims," an organization for Muslims living with HIV/AIDS.

"A nice conversation about Muslim religious identity in North America," says Hussain of his interview with Smiley. Hussain says he remains hopeful that the key to a better future for all humankind lies in interfaith dialogue.

Hussain is associate professor of theological studies, specializing in the study of Islam and contemporary Muslin societies. Since September 11, 2001, he has been interviewed by numerous broadcast outlets and publications, including The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, The New York Times, The Christian Science Monitor, The Washington Post, PBS, and the History Channel.

Oil & Water: Two Faiths, One God (2006, ISBN 1-896836-82-8, 224 pages, softcover) is available for $19.95. For author interviews and review copies contact Aimée J.
