From Cleveland's famous food trucks to the United States Marines, the "Faith, In" project is finding support throughout Cleveland this week.
Several members of the "We have faith, in Cleveland" Street Team, comprised of staff from the United Church of Christ Church House at 700 Prospect Ave., canvassed downtown Cleveland Wednesday afternoon, June 13, spreading the news of the recently launched campaign that combines mission work with love of community.
Armed with goody bags, the Street Team greeted workers out for lunch at “Walnut Wednesday,” a weekly gathering of Cleveland’s super popular food trucks, where hundreds of hungry people lined up to grab a bite to eat.
Street Team members, in easily identified bright red "Do you have faith, in Cleveland?" t-shirts, ventured from food truck line to food truck line talking to folks about the Faith In project, handing out t-shirts and buttons and passing around postcards.
"I really enjoyed going out and interacting with all the people and seeing the different reactions from folks," said LeShawn Davis, administrative assistant for the UCC’s Wider Church Ministries. "I liked explaining to them what the “Faith, In" Project is all about, see them grab onto the heart of it, and want to join in."
With an influx of guests and visitors in Cleveland for Marine Week, Street Team members ventured a few more blocks north to the Lake Erie waterfront to mingle with the crowds assembled for afternoon activities. UCC representatives also had a chance to chat with a few of the hundreds of Marines brought in from all over the country for this event.
"We wanted to welcome the men and women who serve our country to the city and thank them for their sacrifice, and in the process, we told them about the "Faith, In" project, said the Rev. Scott Ressman, the UCC’s minister for worship, music and liturgical arts. "The Marines we spoke with thought the campaign was a wonderful idea and they wanted to take it back to their cities and towns, to help spread it around. One Marine we spoke to sported a "Faith, In" shirt, had his brother take a picture of him wearing it and emailed it to our group later that day. That really made our day."
The "Faith, In" Street Team will venture out every Wednesday afternoon this summer between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., visiting with people taking advantage of a number of activities and events scheduled during lunchtime in downtown Cleveland. Team members also will be present at Cleveland’s annual Pride Festival on Saturday, June 23.
