Media Consolidation

Media concentration affects us all negatively. Large media companies far removed from our every day lives make decisions about what we see and hear.

Companies whose values include too much sexism, racism and violence decide what programs we watch. We don't hear about local issues- from the school board to the mayor to other issues. We can not vote intelligently in our local elections. Consolidation also results in the loss of jobs, adversely affecting women and people of color. People of faith are presented in a cramped, stereotyped manner. UCC fights to ensure that large media companies remain accountable, comply with current laws, and cover local issues.

FCC Localisim Hearing- Washington, DC

On October 31, 2007, the FCC conducted its final hearing on the subject of localism. The DC hearing was part of a series of hearings intended to  gather information about the state of media ownership and local media markets. However, the FCC did not confirm the date, time or location of the hearing until one week prior to the hearing. Despite such short notice, the UCC was able to rally together with other media advocates to testify against the consolidation of media and make certain that the voice of the public was heard.

FCC Media Ownership Hearing- Chicago, IL

In September 2007, the Federal Communications Commission held a media ownership hearing in Chicago, IL. It was one of the few chances members of the public had to speak directly to the public officials who decide how large media companies are allowed to grow.
