The Rev. José A. Malayang

The Rev. José A. Malayang, Executive Minister of the UCC's Local Church Ministries, has been nominated for re-election by LCM's Board of Directors.

The vote took place at the Board's April 18-22 meeting in Cleveland. Malayang will be presented to General Synod 23, meeting in Kansas City, Mo., July 13-17, for call by election to a full, four-year term.

Because the five members of the first Collegium of five UCC officers were elected at General Synod 22 in 1999 to staggered terms, the initial terms of Malayang and the Rev. John H. Thomas will expire this year. At its April 16 meeting in Cleveland, the UCC's Executive Council nominated Thomas for a second term as General Minister and President.

Also at the Local Church Ministries Board meeting, directors took the following actions, among others:

 Approved a revised budget and urged staff to move toward a balanced budget in 2002;

 Adopted and approved the implementation of the screening policy for investments as advocated by the UCC's Corporate Social Responsibilities office;

 Elected to two-year terms, pending a vote at General Synod, Cheryl Cramer of New Orleans, chair, and Jim Henry of Mansfield, Ohio, vice-chair.

 Received the Oversight of Ministry Authorized by the United Church of Christ and recommended its adoption as part of the Manual on Ministry.
