Jan Resseger serves as the (lay) Minister for Public Education and Witness in the United Church of Christ’s Justice and Witness Ministries. With Jan’s leadership the UCC’s Justice and Witness Ministries works for just reform in federal policy through an overhaul of the No Child Left Behind Act, the current version of the federal Elementary and Secondary Act. JWM also staffs work to support adequate and equitable school funding across the states; address academic achievement gaps, advocate for schools that welcome children from all races and cultures, and oppose privatization of public education services. Jan has chaired the National Council of Churches Committee on Public Education and Literacy since 2000. The committee has been working actively for just reform in the No Child Left Behind Act, releasing a statement, "Ten Moral Concerns in the No Child Left Behind Act," and in 2010, "Opportunity Gaps in Public Education Must Be Closed." http://www.ucc.org/justice/public-education/pdfs/OTL-Explanation5th-layout-1.pdf In March 2009 and March 2007, the committee sponsored ecumenical events in Washington, DC to equip faith-based advocates to participate actively in the Congressional debate leading to the reauthorization of the law.
Jan staffed two United Church of Christ public education task forces, whose members engaged in immersion visits to public schools, first in Philadelphia, Portland, Oregon, and rural eastern North Carolina, and later in Cleveland, Phoenix, Hartford, and rural Tennessee. The first task force published a report, Separate and Unequal in 2000. In 2005 the second task force published its final report, Whose Child Left Behind? Why?
Jan became involved in public education advocacy as a parent school funding advocate in the Ohio school district where her two children were educated. She is herself a product of public schools, graduating from Havre High School in Havre, Montana. She earned a B.A. degree from Grinnell College and M.A. degree from the University of Utah. She is a member of Plymouth United Church of Christ in greater Cleveland, Ohio.
