Smithfield Packing Company Workers Vote for Union First Fair Election since 1994
The UCC's General Synod as well as many congregations, pastors, and lay people have been supporting workers at the Smithfield Packing Company in Tar Heel, N. Carolina. Full information is available on JWM's Justice for Smithfield Workers page.
And now there is some good news!
Workers at the Smithfield Packing Company voted in December, 2008, to form a union and have representation through the United Food and Commerical Workers Union. The fair election was possible only after the UFCW and Smithfield Foods reached an agreement over the conduct of the election. This is a major victory for the workers and the allies that have stood by them. More information.
