Faith, Sexual Health and Science

Written by Ann L. Hanson

Early in 2008, I was invited to speak at the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA, before the National Advisory Council, an advisory group to Dr. David Satcher, former United State Surgeon General, and the Center of Excellence for Sexual Health.

The National Advisory Council consists of leaders in the field of sexual health from a broad spectrum of interpretive viewpoints.  It provides a mechanism to advise Dr. Satcher and the Center of Excellence for Sexual Health regarding national initiatives that will strengthen the national dialogue on sexual health and responsible sexual behavior.

The purpose of the March 3, 2008, gathering was to consider the diverse and shared approaches of religious traditions to the relationship of science and the deeply held beliefs of those religious traditions.

Fortunately for me, the Science and Technology Network of the United Church of Christ had just published its landmark resource:  A New Voice Arising: A Pastoral Letter on Faith Engaging Science and Technology.

The text of my presentation can be found here.
