Jim Deming began his position in May 2010 as the Minister for Environmental Justice for the United Church of Christ, Justice and Witness Ministries. Prior to 2010, he began working in 2006 with individuals, congregations, and church leaders to raise the level of awareness of how faith and justice can transform values related to sustainability and global warming. During that time, he worked with organizations such as Tennessee Interfaith Power and Light, Tennessee Environmental Council, and the National Wildlife Federation. Jim is the author of "From Southern Fried Guilt to Spiritual Responsibility" in Love God Heal Earth. He is an ordained United Church of Christ minister and also a presenter with The Climate Project. Jim is a graduate of the University of North Texas and holds an M. Div. from Emory University and an M. Ed. in Human Resource Development from Vanderbilt University.
Jim has worked in religious publishing with Abingdon Press and Westminster/John Knox Press, served as a local church pastor in Ohio and Tennessee, and counseled adolescents in mental health. His non-profit experience includes director of the Ohio Field Office for Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, director of the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services (the state-wide support organization for legal aid), and director of the Kentucky/Tennessee Water Environment Association. Jim is married to Lynne Deming who is the World Editor for The Upper Room and they have two sons David and Daniel, two daughters-in-law Janine and Ayumi, and a wonderful grandchild Maia Lynne born July 10, 2009.
