Beginning Farmer and Rancher Opportunity Act
Cultivate
a New Generation of Sustainable Farmers and Ranchers
The Beginning Farmer and Rancher Opportunity Act is our chance to ensure food
security for future generations and new farming enterprises that can bring jobs
and economic renewal to revitalize our nation’s communities.
We
need to provide a healthier diet for all Americans and stem the tide of
“diabesity” and other diet-related disease. That will necessitate recruiting
more men and women to become farmers. Feeding all Americans under current
dietary guidelines from U.S. farms would require 10 million new acres of fruit
and vegetable production. New farmers are needed to lead the way in this new,
health-driven market.
Farming is among the most difficult professions to enter because of the
enormous uncertainties in the market and the weather, not to mention the access
to land and technical expertise required.
This legislation will support new farmers by providing:
- Better access to land, capital and credit through
government-backed loans
- Greater access to conservation dollars so that new farmers
can farm in ways that foster clean air, soil and water
- Help in reducing barriers to entry to farming at the local
level by providing access to technical assistance and training
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom
Vilsack called attention to a real
worry when he asked: “Why not place the nation’s attention on the
need for young farmers on the same plane as police officers and teachers? They
are equally important to the future of this country.”
The Beginning Farmer Act will expand
and improve upon proven programs that provide tools and incentives to ensure
the effective start-up and success of small and mid-sized family farmers across
the country. This legislation is a jobs
creator that helps new farmers and ranchers get a start. It is an excellent opportunity to break down
barriers to entry and give real support to aspiring farmers across this nation.
