2012 UCC Coffee Project Annual Report
The now nine-year-old UCC Coffee Project is a partnership of the UCC Justice & Witness Ministries and Equal Exchange Fairly Traded Coffee, Chocolate and Tea.
Thank you, United Church of Christ congregations!!! In 2012, the UCC Coffee Project sold 59,767 pounds of fairly traded products. Over 72 percent of those sales were for fairly traded coffee, though sales of chocolate increased significantly.
Each year, Equal Exchange contributes $0.15 to the UCC Justice & Witness Ministries Small Farmers' Fund for every pound of fairly traded products sold. In 2012, Equal Exchange returned $8,965.02 to the UCC Small Farmers' Fund, which supports the Franklinton Center Just Food Project, a program in sustainable and nutritious agriculture in rural Whitakers, North Carolina.
Of the 435 congressional districts in the United States, the area of 24 counties which make up North Carolina's First Congressional District is second only to the Bronx, N.Y., as the largest food desert in the United States. Just Food is working with small farmers to develop ways to use land at Franklinton Center to grow fruits and vegetables to address food insecurity in the area and to educate and demonstrate about health issues that plague the people of the rural communities in the area.
The UCC Coffee Project has grown in the nine years since the partnership began in 2004. During this time Equal Exchange has returned $81,638 to the UCC Justice & Witness Ministries Small Farmers' Fund.
