The Rev. J. Bennett Guess, executive minister of the UCC's Local Church Ministries and a member of the UCC's five-person Collegium of Officers, will deliver the commencement address for the 2012 graduating class of Andover Newton Theological School in Newton Centre, Mass.
The ceremony will be held May 19 in the First Baptist Church of Newton and will be followed by a reception on the Andover Newton campus.
A former journalist whose academic background includes public policy studies, Guess received an M.Div. degree from Vanderbilt Divinity School in Nashville, Tenn., and a D.Min. degree from Chicago Theological Seminary. He spent 12 years as pastor in various local churches and has served the UCC in the national setting as communication director for Justice and Witness Ministries and as the denomination's communication director.
The school's faculty has chosen graduating senior Jennifer Macy as its student speaker. Macy, a UCC member and native of Beverly, Mass., is a Fund for Theological Education Scholar who founded a multicultural youth group at Christ Church United in Lowell, Mass.
Senior faculty will honor graduating seniors in a special gathering May 2 in the school's Wilson Chapel. Baccalaureate will be celebrated starting at 7 p.m. at Eliot Church, 474 Centre St. in Newton, by graduating seniors. The class of 2012 has chosen Wilson Chapel director the Rev. Mary Luti, visiting professor of worship and preaching, as its speaker for the event.
