A Year in the Life - Celebrating 150 Years of Ministry The Chancel Choir of First Congregational Church of St. Louis, Missouri "The year 2001 finds the First Congregational Church of St. Louis celebrating a year's worth of events to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of our founding. Continuing a long tradition of fine sacred music as an important part of worship, we think it is most appropriate to include a recording of some of the music heard throughout the church year as part of our anniversary celebration. . . The Zelle Memorial Organ heard on this recording was built in 1929 as opus 1607 of the Austin Organ Company of Hartford, Connecticut. Additions and updates were completed in 1994 and 1997. The instrument contains 52 ranks of pies on four manuals." "Let Freedom Ring!" A Liberation Collection, Words and Music by Steve Peterson Peterson's voice sings out in memory of James Byrd, Jr. and African-American man who was dragged to his death behind a pickup truck and to Matthew Shepard, a young gay man beaten beyond recognition, tied to a fence and left to die. Peterson says "Hatred, intolerance and prejudice are alive and well in the land in the land of the free. Just as hatred and intolerance kill, so does silence and apathy. To Matt Shepard, James Byrd Jr., and all victims of hate crimes, Let Freedom Ring! For those who are oppressed by religious and political organizations for simply being who they are, Let Freedom Ring! For all people, everywhere, Let Freedom Ring!" We Gather Together, Hymns & Spirituals for Solo Jazz Piano by Bradley Sowash "The songs in this collection represent some of the best-loved hymns and spirituals in America. Their durability is intriguing. Generations of handing down new renditions have reduced them to their essential qualities. This 'essence' offers a composer and musician plenty of room for interpretation and improvisation. Having sought to make them my own, I now invite you to do the same."
