A new strategic plan for Global Ministries will emphasize nurturing global communities, working for peace with justice worldwide, sharing the story of mission locally and developing resources for collaborative opportunities. The newly-adopted mission statement says Global Ministries will "receive and share the Good News of Jesus Christ by joining with global and local partners to work for justice, reconciliation and peace."
The Common Global Ministries Board of the UCC in partnership with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) unanimously approved the new long-range plan, which takes effect in January 2013, at its recent board meeting. Global Ministries is a partnership between the UCC's Wider Church Ministries and the Disciples of Christ. The previous strategic plan lasted five years.
The Rev. James A. Moos, executive minister for the UCC's Wider Church Ministries, said the new one-page document provides clarity about Global Ministries' vision, mission and values, and outlines directions to help guide worldwide programs.
"Clarity about who we are and where we want to go will enable us to identify opportunities and allocate resources more effectively and efficiently," Moos said. "The second key is flexibility. Older style strategic plans set fixed, numerical goals to be achieved over a multi-year period. In a rapidly changing environment where needs and resources are in constant states of flux, this approach is no longer realistic. The new Global Ministries Strategic Plan has the clarity to point us to the future, and the flexibility to live out our core principles in rapidly changing contexts."
The Global Ministries board undertook a year-long assessment to gather information and feedback from missionaries, conference and regional ministers, and global partners before evaluating the results. A committee of board and staff members combined to write the strategic plan and vision, and on Nov. 10, the GM board reviewed the statement and added its thoughts before approving the vision plan. Global Ministries staff members will determine daily objectives to help them reach and fulfill the new goals.
A short video detailing the strategic plan in picture and music premiered at the gathering, and is available for local church use. A commissioned hymn expressing the statement's key words and phrases in lyric and song is also available.
