File UCC volunteers unearth history at Franklinton Center at Bricks

In a corner of a small community, on the outskirts of Whitakers, N.C., sits Old Bricks Cemetery, the graveyard of a former plantation. The cemetery, long forgotten and overgrown, turned into a historical site unearthed by a clean-up and restoration effort led by a team of young volunteers from the United Church of Christ.

Through a sense of community, spirit and discussion, African American women in the United Church of Christ came together at the Franklinton Center at Bricks to renew their commitment to ministry. The 2012 African American Women In Ministry Conference, held Oct. 11-13, examined opportunities for women at various stages in their ministry -- beginning, middle, and retirement -- to serve the church in the global arena, advocacy work and non-profit work.


File Embracing the power of literacy at Franklinton Center summer retreat

Fifty children and their families in North Carolina are learning about the power of literacy, thanks to a collaborative project hosted by the UCC's Franklinton Center at Bricks (FCAB). The conference, retreat and education center in Eastern North Carolina hosted students, parents and staff of the Inborden Elementary School this week, as part of FCAB's first Summer Literacy retreat.

Grateful for opportunities pursued and blessings received over the past 16 years, the Rev. Ervin E. Milton will step down, effective Dec. 31, from his position as director and team leader of the UCC's Franklinton Center at Bricks.
