A New Pope

A New Pope

The Catholic Church (and the world) has received a new pope. Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who will henceforth be known as Pope Francis, is the first non-European Catholic pontiff in 1,200 years. He strives to live simply, and is known for his outreach to the poor. He also upholds the Church's theologically conservative stances, and has been accused of not doing enough to stop the abuses of the military dictatorship in his country's Dirty War.

Multifaceted God of complexity, you know better than any of us that we are each multi-faceted and complex individuals.  Your dear son Jorge Mario has been called to a mighty post in leading Your people. Bless his heart, God, and purify his soul. Allow his virtues to shine and his vices to be burned away by Your light and love.

Shed Your light on our vantage point as well, God, that we in the rest of Your church may see clearly. Show us where to align and applaud and where respectfully to critique and to question as we get to know this new pope, so that all of Your complex children throughout the world may live together in peace and dignity.
