"Since he wanted to find out what Paul was being accused of by the Jews, the next day he released him and ordered the chief priests and the entire council to meet. He brought Paul down and had him stand before them." - Acts 22:30
We do want to stand up for Jesus. But as one woman said so eloquently, I want to stand up to Congress and I don't know how. People wonder how the government could have a partial shutdown and why democratic citizens didn't stand up to them. There is a reason. We didn't know what to do or how to do it. We shook our heads, with incredulity and impotence. The authorities brought us in and we just stood and stared.
By the time you read this devotional, Congress will have done something. Or not done something. Or partially done something. We will be getting ready for the next crisis, with the sound of that tinny can being kicked down the road.
Devotionally, let us meditate about what happened. The authorities shut down our government for 16 days and our “standing” sounded a lot like that pathetic can.
I'm glad I know Paul. I'm glad he stood up before the authorities, for the Jesus he knew. I hope I take the chance to move beyond incredulity and impotence too.
O God, especially when we don't know what to do or to say, devote and empower us to stand before the authorities and make sure they know we are watching, with faith and hope in our eyes. Amen.
