Surviving Singlehood – Nine Signs from the ScripturesWritten by Rev. Michelle L. Torigian
It can sometimes be difficult to be single in a world of couples. Take heart and count the blessings in your life, by following a cue or two in these scriptures.
No matter what your marital status (single, married, divorced, widowed), you are made in God's image.
"So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." Genesis 1:27
Did someone end a relationship? Is your heart broken? God is near to you when your soul has been shattered.
"The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit." Psalm 34:18
Sometimes, we think yesterday was better because we were not single…
"Do not say, 'why were the former days better than these? For it is not from wisdom that you ask this.'" Ecclesiastes 7:10
Yet today has joys of its own…
"Go, eat your bread with enjoyment, and drink your wine with a merry heart; for God has long ago approved what you do." Ecclesiastes 9:7
It takes time to find someone who is the best suited for each of us.
"Do not stir up or awaken love until it is ready." Song of Solomon 3:1-5
Just because you don't have a "traditional" family, doesn't mean you don't have kin. Your friends become your family.
"Jesus replied 'Who are my mother and my brothers?' And looking at those who sat around him, he said 'Here are my mother and my brothers!'" Mark 3:33-34
Being single is a fabulous time to listen for God and understand God's call in your life, to accomplish amazing things for God, creation, and yourself.
"I want you to be free from concerns. A man who isn't married is concerned about the Lord's concerns – how he can please the Lord." 1 Corinthians 7:32
Do not settle for anything less than you deserve. Learn what real love is.
"Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
When all else fails, think of Jesus. Our fearless leader was a single, thirty-something guy with lots of great friends.
