Recap
As people approach midlife, the days of youthful exploration, when life felt like one big blind date, are fading. Schedules compress, priorities change and people often become pickier in what they want in their friends […] Manipulators, drama queens, egomaniacs: a lot of them just no longer make the cut.

Prayer
God, we know Ruth was willing to follow Naomi anywhere, Mary traveled days to see Elizabeth, and Jonathan would have given up his throne for David.  Sure, they are great models for friendships – but let's be real: most of us are so busy that even our dogs sometimes think we make lousy best friends.  I know you must be busier than we are, and yet you miraculously have the time for all of us.  So how about it, God, do you think you could spare some of your divine-scheduling-mojo?  Help me cross out some dates on my calendar to – gasp – play?

And maybe the real challenge isn't my schedule, but me.  So the next time he calls inviting me out for dinner, God, keep me from debating my answer, simply because he chews with his mouth open.  And maybe you could help me pick up the phone and invite her over for drinks, even though sometimes she talks just a little too much about princess-perfect-the-wonder-child.  After all – if people get pickier with age, none of us will ever make the cut – even me!  We pray all of this in your name, O God, the one who is willing to put up with all of us – even me.  Thanks be to you, God.  Amen.
