Recap
This article explores the ways in which we still fear each other and make snap judgments that undermine civility and the beloved community. The author suggests that we all need to look in the mirror to assess the depths of this country's sickness with regard to racism and and other forms of discrimination.

Prayer
God of Ella Baker and Pauli Murray, God of Martin and Malcolm, God of Bella Abzug and Abraham Joshua Heschel--we invoke your spirit this day as we await a verdict in this volatile trial.

In a word: lamentation. _________________. There's no way to fill in the blank. Rage, fear, grief, accusation, vindication, loss...all of it a sweeping indictment of the work which yet remains that we all might look in the eyes of another, without fear, and mirror the response of our Creator who "saw that it was good." May our national spirit evolve in such a way that social policy and everyday interactions echo the hip hop aphorism "it's all good."

May Sophia's wisdom guide our stammering tongues in private conversations that we might be vanguards for nuanced assessment dipped in radical love. Help us to seize our capacity to build bridges with one another, recognizing James Baldwin's warning thru a Negro spiritual "God gave Noah the rainbow sign, no more water but fire next time." Amen.
