Recap
On Wednesday, June 26, 2013, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that part of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was unconstitutional.  Gay and lesbian couples who married in a state where same-sex marriage is legal can now receive the same federal benefits as heterosexual married couples.  As the Supreme Court refused to decide on the California Proposition 8 case, same-sex marriage is once again legal in the state of California.

Prayer
God, it's been a busy couple of weeks in our country.  On Tuesday, June 25, the Supreme Court placed voter rights in jeopardy.  Tuesday evening, Texas State Senator Wendy Davis spoke for hours to filibuster a bill restricting abortion access.  Then on Wednesday, we heard the Supreme Court's decision on DOMA and Prop 8.

Most of us celebrate when rights are expanded and mourn when rights are taken away.  We give thanks when "justice rolls down like waters, and righteousness like an everflowing stream." (Amos 5:24)

But still, churches and communities are so divided over these issues.  God, I know we are all made in your image - both those of us who agree and disagree.  Help us to continue the dialogues so that our neighbors' stories are heard.  Open our souls so we recognize that we are all part of the Body of Christ.  May each and every person be seen with equal value and dignity.  Amen.
