Pope Benedict Steps Down: Who will be the next Pope?
February 12, 2013
For the first time in nearly 600 years, the Pope is resigning because his "strengths due to an advanced age are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry." An online gambling site takes bets on who will replace him.
God, we thank you for the priesthoods of all your believers – for the ministries of the plow truck drivers and the school teachers, the lawyers and the clergy. In particular, we thank you for the reminder given, through Pope Benedict XVI, that who and what you are calling each of us to be is constantly evolving. May we all be so open to the new insights and directions you have in store for ourselves and for your churches.
And oddly enough, God, we also thank you for the betting and the reminder it brings that your churches are, in fact, human institutions, subject to human error and sin. If you're rigging the betting, can you make the next Pope someone who can help us – and the church – with all of our addictions – perhaps most importantly to pride and prestige? Many thanks, and Amen.
