Exodus International shuts down "cure" ministry
June 21, 2013
Exodus International, an organization whose mission was to "help" gay Christians become straight, is shutting down after 37 years. They said in a letter of apology, "For quite some time, we've been imprisoned in a worldview that's neither honoring toward our fellow human beings, nor biblical."
God of love, we give thanks that Alan Chambers has come to a greater acceptance of himself, a deeper understanding of your word, and a new ministry. But today we pray for all of your children who were hurt for so long by the actions Exodus is now apologizing for. May your healing and caring presence be with them all.
God, help each of us to accept who we are, beautiful, complicated, unique creations beloved by you. Help us to be comfortable and at peace with ourselves so that we can encounter others with love and not fear. Free us from the categories and codes humans design to crush your amazing diversity into something more comfortable for ourselves.
As we reflect on the damage that has been done to members of the LGBT community in the name of religion, we pray today that everyone who identifies as lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, or questioning can know your complete and overwhelming love and acceptance exactly as they are. Amen.
